Gatsby is a very food-driven pup, and so we tend to go through a lot of treats in our everyday training. We definitely have some tried and true treats that we love to buy and re-buy (more on those later) but I figured it might be a fun change to bake our own!
My boyfriend has a peanut allergy, and it took me a bit of searching to find a recipe that didn’t have peanut butter in it. Trust me, you can make delicious and healthy treats without it! I started with this awesome recipe from The Midnight Baker, but I made a few modifications to enhance it. I added in Flaxseed Meal for protein and crunch as well as grated carrots for colour and taste. I used whole wheat flour but you could substitute any flour of your choice.
1/2 cup grated carrots
1 cup puréed pumpkin
1 cup whole oats
1 cup flaxseed meal
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
Preheat oven to 350º Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Mix together ingredients in a bowl. Working to incorporate all the ingredients equally to form a dry but sticky dough. If your dough is too wet add more flour in small increments.
Roll out dough to approximately a quarter inch thick and use a small cookie cutter of your choice to cut out the cookies.
Bake for 30 minutes, and leave the cookies in the oven while it cools. This will help dry them out for easy storage.
Using my small heart shaped cookie cutter I was able to make about 120 treats from this recipe. And the best part? Gatsby LOVES them!
